Welcome to the City of Macon Fire Department's Page!

Mission Statement
The mission of the City of Macon's Fire Department is to provide fire suppression, auto extrications, hazardous materials rescues, disaster response and related emergency services to the residents and guests of our community.

Interim Fire Chief is Billy Whitehead. He replaced Charlie Fraley, Jr. upon his sudden death on April 12, 2008, after a 27-year tenure as Fire Chief. Mr. Whitehead joined the Department since 1979.

City of Macon Fire Department History
Records indicate that on May 11, 1870, a group of concerned citizens formed a fire fighting force, under the name of Macon Hook and Ladder Company, to provide fire protection to the community. Their original equipment, consisting of buckets and axes, was replaced in 1873 with fire hose that was loaded onto a horse-drawn wagon. When a fire occured, one took out his handgun and fired into the air then yelled, "fire over here"! The message was relayed to the courhouse, where a wagon wheel and hammer was hung from a tripod and used as a fire alarm.

Tips for Fire Prevention:

1.
Be sure that your address number is clearly visible to responding fire/rescue workers.
2.
Have a working smoke detector outside the bedrooms and on every floor of your home.
3.
Keep blankets, curtains, clothing, and other flammable items away from portable heaters, wall heaters, and stoves.
4.
Never smoke in bed. Keep lighters and matches away from children.
5.
Do not overload electrical outlets. Avoid running electrical cords under carpets, doors, and furniture. Only use electrical appliances and cords in good condition.
6.
Check chimneys and flue pipes for cracks and proper security. Do not allow combustibles to come in contact with flues.
7.
Keep your fireplace chimney clean. Always keep fireplace doors or screens closed to prevent sparks from igniting nearby combustibles.
8.
Keep all L.P. gas and oil tanks, valves, piping, and appliances in good condition.
9.
Practice good housekeeping. Avoid accumultating large amounts of combustibles in attics, garages or other rooms.
10.
Store gasoline and other flammable liquids in safety cans. Use flammable liquids only in well-ventilated spaces.

What to do when Fire Has Been Discovered:

1.
Alert others and exit the sctructure as soon as possible, making an account of everyone.
2.
Call 911 to report the fire.
3.
Clearly give address and directions to the 911 operator, including the nearest intersection and telephone number.
4.
Go to the street or road to direct the fire engine. Make sure that no vehicle blocks the entrance for fire equipment or ambulance.
5.
Stay out. Do not intend to go in to look for any valuable object which you may find after the fire is out.
