City
of Macon Fire Department History
Records indicate that on May 11, 1870, a group of
concerned citizens formed
a fire fighting force, under the name of Macon Hook and Ladder Company,
to provide fire protection to the community. Their original equipment,
consisting of buckets and axes, was replaced in 1873 with fire hose
that was loaded onto a horse-drawn wagon. When a fire occured, one
took out his handgun and fired into the air then yelled, "fire
over here"! The message was relayed to the courhouse, where a
wagon wheel and hammer was hung from a tripod and used as a fire alarm.
Tips
for Fire Prevention:
| 1. |
Be
sure that your address number is clearly visible to responding
fire/rescue workers. |
| 2. |
Have a working smoke detector outside the bedrooms and on every
floor of your home. |
| 3. |
Keep
blankets, curtains, clothing, and other flammable items away
from portable heaters, wall heaters, and stoves. |
| 4. |
Never
smoke in bed. Keep lighters and matches away from children. |
| 5. |
Do
not overload electrical outlets. Avoid running electrical cords
under carpets, doors, and furniture. Only use electrical appliances
and cords in good condition. |
| 6. |
Check
chimneys and flue pipes for cracks and proper security. Do not
allow combustibles to come in contact with flues. |
| 7. |
Keep
your fireplace chimney clean. Always keep fireplace doors or
screens closed to prevent sparks from igniting nearby combustibles. |
| 8. |
Keep
all L.P. gas and oil tanks, valves, piping, and appliances in
good condition. |
| 9. |
Practice
good housekeeping. Avoid accumultating large amounts of combustibles
in attics, garages or other rooms. |
| 10. |
Store
gasoline and other flammable liquids in safety cans. Use flammable
liquids only in well-ventilated spaces. |

Alert
others and exit the sctructure as soon as possible, making an
account of everyone. |
| 2. |
Call
911 to report the fire. |
| 3. |
Clearly
give address and directions to the 911 operator, including the
nearest intersection and telephone number. |
| 4. |
Go
to the street or road to direct the fire engine. Make sure that
no vehicle blocks the entrance for fire equipment or ambulance. |
| 5. |
Stay
out. Do not intend to go in to look for any valuable object
which you may find after the fire is out. |
